Filming Day 4

On Sunday 14th October we re-filmed the narrative of the video. These shots included the main narrative character and the love interest, we used both the park and a house for the setting. We didn't get as much footage as what we got when we first filmed the scenes however when putting it together we had enough for what we wanted.
It started to rain before filming so we had to wait for the rain to stop and for the grass to dry a bit before filming. We shot the narrative in the park when it was sunny and later when it started to rain we were filming from the inside of a house with the love interest in the window looking out to the street where she sees her ex walk past.
This is where the two characters are together holding hands.
This is when the love interest is talking to the main narrative character before breaking up with him and walking away.

This was when the love interest broke up with the main narrative character, and she walks away when Henry goes to grab her.
This is a later scene where the main narrative character can be scene outside the love interests house looking up at the window.

Mise-en-scene

Costume
Performance
The actors will be wearing casual clothing such as Jeans, T shirt and Converses.
These are generic conventions of rock.
Narrative
The actors will be wearing casual clothing. The male will wear jeans and a plain T shirt. The female will wear jeans and a top.

Lighting
Performance
Stage Lighting. Orangey yellow spot lights which will be focused on the drummer and guitarist. The lead singer will look silhouetted against the white backdrop. This makes all of the band members stand out to the audience at different times of the video depending on what angle the camera is at.
Narrative
Natural daylight for the scenes outside, natural daylight coming through the window for the inside scenes. This will help make the shots more effective than high-key or low-key lighting would as they don't take any attention away from the actual story line of the narrative.

Actors
Performance
Will will be playing the lead singer
Lewis will be playing the electric guitar.
Kane will be playing the drums.
Actions will include performing in set position, walking around stage and performing at the same time (except drummer)
Narrative
Henry will be playing the main narrative character.
Hollie will be playing the love interest.
Actions will include holding hands, hugging, looking in love, holding hands, then letting go when they break up.

Make-up
Performance
None of the actors will wear make-up. Due to them being male and not into wearing make-up.
Narrative
Main character doesn't wear any make-up.
Love interest will wear make-up, a good amount of make-up due to her spending time with her boyfriend.

Props
Performance
Guitar, Drums, Bass these are the instruments which will be played by the band members. Amps will also be used to make it look more authentic.
Equipment- Cameras, tripod and lighting equipment
Narrative
Photo-album which will show pictures of the main narrative character and the love interest when they were a couple. Alcoholic beverage which is going to be a beer bottle.
Equipment - Camera, tripod

Setting
Performance
School Hall - the setting is going to be in the school hall because they had the band at school and we feel that this makes it link to the lyrics well.
Narrative
Park - the shots in the park will be of the main character and love interest, the shots will be of the couple when they are together as well as when they break-up.
Flat, Main character
House - we are going to include shots which are of the love interests house, the shots will be off the love interest in the house and also the main narrative character walking past outside the house.

We are using both performance and narrative and then will be switching between them when editing.

Feedback

In today's lesson we showed our piece so far to the rest of our class. One of the main points which was empathized was that the lead singer (Henry) wasn't acting up to the standards which could be achieved by another member of the class instead. It was then decided that we would use someone else to be the lead singer in the performance parts of the video. However Henry still wanted to act in the video and so we chose for him to still act in the narrative parts of the video. We thought that it would work well to use two different lots of characters to help break up the performance and the narrative scenes even though they would be in the same video, these will then be brought together in post production.

There is a phone shown during the video, this was so the actor was wondering whether to call his ex or not. People noticed this and pointed out that its the summer of 69 and phones weren't invented. I found this was a good point and am willing to remove it from the video. Yet another member pointed out though that this was further on from the summer of 69, but i don't feel it is that much further on and even if it was the phone would have to be much bigger than the one we used.

Also fed-back was that people didn't feel as though the directing and camera work was split fairly due to Henry wanting to be acting, therefore we have now decided to split the directing between the both of us. Henry directing the narrative and me directing the performance.

People also wondered the reason why the couple broke up because it is not shown in the video at any point, we weren't planning on putting it in but now we are going to re-plan the narrative to see if this would work better.

Overall we have decided that we are going to re-shoot as much of the footage as possible, this will give us more to work with when it comes to editing.

Filming Day 3

On the third day of filming we shot the scenes for the band that they had at school. This included the lead singer Henry, the bass player Will and the drummer Kane. We managed to get a variety of shots of the bassist and drummer, however the lead singer didn't turn up until the end of filming so we didn't get as much footage of him.
When using the lighting, it was decided that the lead singer should look silhouetted against the white backdrop, the other two band members would be seen in a sunset spot light, we decided this because it puts focus on the bassist and drummer who this shot was about. We decided to have the silouet because the attention would then be drawn in to the lead singer.

The camera was positioned at the left of the stage facing the band at an angle.
This is a still from straight on of the band members which we will be using in the video.
The camera for this shot was positioned at the right of the stage facing the band.
This is a still of the bassist 'Jimmy'.
This is a still of the drummer 'Jody'.

Editing

We overlapped three shots to create a fade into a close-up of the hands and then back to the long shot of the two walking towards the camera.
At the moment I'm not happy with this shot because when the close-up is shown the two actors are stood still and therefore the transitions don't flow as well as I wanted them to.

This is the break up scene, where the love interest breaks up with the lead singer.
This is the scene where the lead singer walks down the hill after being broken up with. We chose to have it darker than the scenes when they were together as we thought this showed the mood of the scene well.

Here is the bar at the bottom which includes everything which we have edited so far.
We have added the audio so we know where bits go as well as what we have left to add.

Here are screen shots of the bit were using to show how the lead singer still feels about his ex.
We are going to get a handheld close up of the phone screen, this couldn't be done on the day because of the positioning of the bench and the sun at the time was reflecting off the screen so you weren't able to see the number on it.

Lighting

Today we were shown how to operate the lighting equipment in the hall. We are using the lighting for the band scene which will be shot in the school hall. After going through a tutoiral of how to turn on the lights, how to move them and how to change the effects we were able to choose how we wanted the lights to be.
We have chosen a yellow orange for the spotlight and have named it sunset on the programm, this means it should be easy to find when we actually use it for filming.
We have also pre-set the positioning of the lights, so they should be in the right position when we go to use them.

Filming Day 2

Our second day of filming was on the 30th September, we filmed the scenes which involved the lead singer and the love interest. These were both the scenes when they were a couple and also when they had broke up. We got a good amount of footage so we shall have enough for the video and we shouldn't have to go and re-shoot these scenes again. We decided to film the same shot several times from a number of different angles, this means that we will be able to use the best shots and also use a variety of angles when editing.
The people who were acting are Henry Inman and Hollie Furniss.
We filmed all of the footage we got at the park but in different areas of the park.
The equipment we used was a video camera, tripod, camera for stills and mobile phone.

This is the location which we were filming at.

I also took some stills when filming, we are planning on using these for the photo album scene which we will be filming on a later date.
