Digipak Analysis 1

On a Day Like Today - Bryan Adams

This album includes 4 singles; On a Day Like Today, When Your'e Gone, Cloud Number 9 and Inside Out. It was released on 27th October 1998.
Here is the music video for On a Day Like Today. . .

Front Panel

Here is the front panel of the digipak. It shows an elephant walking behind Bryan Adams in the streets of New York City. The front cover has no titles of words on the actual panel but instead a sticker with the name of the artist and the number of tracks on the disk as well as in bold writing 'on a day like today' this is because it is not only a track on the album but also the name of it.
This is one of the shots seen in the music video. It is a memorable shot from the video and one of the most spoken about in the comment box on YouTube. Meaning that the front cover of Bryan Adams with the elephant is effective and relevant to the music video.
As well as the elephant, Bryan Adams has also got a guitar case on his back, this is because he is credited to play the guitar in all of his songs and is one of the first things you think of when Bryan Adams is mentioned.
Bryan Adams is to the right of the cover and is not making any eye-contact or facing the camera when this photo was taken. He also looks to have a more 'serious' facial expression. The digipak is in sepia, this is a warmer, and softer alternative to black and white. It also doesn't have any distracting colour which allows the audience to focus on the subjects in the image - Bryan Adams and the elephant. Sepia also can be used to make an image appear 'old' but again without the harshness that can come with black and white. I think that this helps set the mood and tone of the CD well.
All of the writing is in lower case with no capitals throughout the whole CD. I think that this adds to the subtlety of the album as well as being different to digipaks that follow all generic conventions.

Back Panel

This is the back panel of Bryan Adams digipak. It continues with the colour scheme throughout the digipak. The picture shows Adams in a studio recording a song, again he is holding a guitar and still not center of the panel or making any eye-contact  The track-listing is at the bottom of the panel and goes the full length of it, the font is the same as what is used on the front of the digipak on the sticker. The bar-code is at the top right of the panel.

Inside Panels
On the left inside panel there are the lyrics from the song 'On a Day Like Today'.
On the right hand inside panel there is the CD and on the CD there is the artists name 'Bryan Adams' and the  track names. As well as there been the words 'On a Day Like Today' wrote several times at the bottom of the CD.

Spine
This is the spine from the digipak 'On a Day Like Today'. It is very simple with only the name of the artist and the name of the album on it. The text matches the text which is a sticker put on the front panel of the digipak. The font is in white which has a nice subtle contrast to the sepia background. This adds to the mood of the digipak with it looking more toned down than it would have done with colour that had brash contrast.
The writing is all lower case as this helps portray the mood and tone of the CD and the songs on the CD as well. This challenges the convention of Bryan Adams digipaks who tends to use all block capitals which stand out. However I think that the lower cases go well with the coloring of the CD and there's slightly transparent writing underneath the name.

  1. I know this isn;t finished yet but make sure you talk about expressions, props, body language, colours, typography, moods and so on. Blog looking good.

Make sure you get some more filming done out of class over the next week, and photos for your ancillary tasks ASAP.

  2. You might ask why the font is all lower case too.

Good work, blog is looking good (low level 4 - A-). Make sure filming and editing is still going on during all of this.
